Who we are
Slump Siren ("we", "us", "the app") is a reading-recommendation tool that suggests books to readers who are in a reading slump. For the purposes of UK data protection law, the data controller is Slump Siren. If you have any questions about this policy or your data, contact us at slumpsiren@gmail.com.
This policy explains what personal data we collect, why, how it is handled, and the rights you have over it.
What this policy covers
Slump Siren is a simple app with no user accounts and no login. We have deliberately designed it to collect as little personal data as possible. There are three points where data is involved:
1. The slump description you type. When you describe your reading slump and ask for recommendations, the text you enter is sent to our AI provider (Anthropic) to generate your diagnosis and book suggestions.
- This text is not stored by us. The recommendation process is stateless — once your suggestions are returned, we do not keep a record of what you typed, and a later visit will not remember it.
- Please avoid including personal details (your name, contact details, or sensitive information about yourself or others) in the box — it isn't needed to get recommendations.
2. Book suggestions you choose to submit. If you use the "Share a Slump Breaker" form to suggest a book, we store what you submit (for example, a book title, and an author name if you choose to add one) in our database so we can consider it for the library.
- Submissions can be anonymous — the author field and any identifying details are optional.
- We use submissions to curate and improve the library. We do not publish your identity.
3. Basic technical data. Like most websites, our hosting provider may automatically process limited technical information (such as IP address and basic request logs) to serve the app securely and reliably. We do not use this to identify you.
We do not: sell your data, show advertising, build advertising profiles, or require you to create an account.
Our legal bases for processing
Under UK GDPR, we rely on:
- Legitimate interests — to operate and improve the app, generate recommendations, curate the library, and keep the service secure. We have balanced this against your rights and keep data collection minimal.
- Consent — where you actively choose to submit a book suggestion through the form.
Who we share data with (our processors)
We use a small number of trusted third-party services to run the app. They process data on our behalf under their own terms:
- Anthropic — provides the AI that generates your recommendations. Your slump description is sent to Anthropic's API to produce a response. Under Anthropic's commercial API terms, inputs are not used to train their models. See Anthropic's privacy policy for details.
- Supabase — securely stores book suggestions submitted through the form.
- Lovable — hosts the app.
We do not share your data with anyone else except where required by law.
International transfers
Some of our providers may process data outside the UK. Where they do, appropriate safeguards (such as standard contractual clauses or equivalent protections) are relied upon to keep your data protected to UK standards.
How long we keep data
- Slump descriptions: not retained — processed to generate your recommendations and not stored.
- Book submissions: kept for as long as needed to review and, if suitable, add the book to the library. Submissions are anonymous and are not linked to you, so in most cases they contain no personal data about you — the book title itself is not your personal information. If you chose to include personal details in a submission, or you would like a suggestion you sent to be taken down, email us and describe it; we will consider removing it, though because submissions are anonymous we may not be able to confirm which one was yours.
- Technical logs: retained by our hosting provider only as long as needed for security and operation.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to: access the personal data we hold about you; ask us to correct or delete it; object to or restrict our processing; and request portability where applicable. Because we store so little (and store nothing from the recommendation box), in most cases we will simply have nothing on file — but you are welcome to ask.
To exercise any right, email slumpsiren@gmail.com. You also have the right to complain to the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
Children
Slump Siren is intended for adult readers and is not directed at anyone under 18. The library includes romance content, some of it explicitly marked as mature/dark and gated behind an opt-in. Please do not use the app or submit information if you are under 18.
Cookies and similar technologies
We do not currently use non-essential or advertising cookies. Our hosting may set limited technical cookies necessary to run the site. If we add privacy-friendly, cookieless analytics in future, we will update this policy accordingly.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app develops. The "last updated" date at the top will always reflect the current version.
